Experienced by Kimatni D. Rawlins
It was a glorious Saturday morning in College Park, Maryland for the 3rd Annual College Park Mother’s Day 5K put on by the College Park Community Foundation (CPCF). Fresh off five straight days of rain the sun broke through and blessed us with the perfect amount of energy for the family fun run. We’re so proud of everyone for rising early and energizing their lives.
The Fit Fathers team was on deck with both experienced, first time runners and walkers to show solidarity and support of one of God’s greatest treasures. My cousin Havena Rawlins drove down from Delaware with personal trainer Jermaine to participate in her first ever 5K. It was amazing seeing her cross the finish line, and with the sweat to prove it. Yeah baby, you did it! Also, the father of my daughter’s best friend – John Bryant — was equally excited since it was his first official race although he is an avid runner. His wife Bibby and her friend also participated.
The College Park Mother’s Day 5K is focused on promoting health and family togetherness. Proceeds of the race benefit CPCF, which raises money to support charitable projects in the city. The race started and finished at College Park City Hall on a quick and flat course through the scenic, quiet and friendly streets of downtown College Park, Calvert Hills, Old Town, Frat Row and Baltimore Avenue.
As a father, son, brother, uncle and friend, the role of mothers is highly respected on my depth chart. Running with this level of enlightenment was all too special. My mother Lorraine Jones raised us single-handedly without the help of any man and still continues to do so with two of her grandkids. She never complained, she never gave in and she never stopped caring. Mothers like her make me fight harder to be a great and involved father. My four sisters – three of which have children – are my best friends and confidants. Misa, the mother of my two daughters ran the race with the team as well. She is very supportive of Fit Fathers’ community events and replicates equivalent passion as the organizers of the groups we partner with. She is my soul mate, wife, advisor and global travel partner. I would be hard pressed finding anyone else that protects her family, instills healthful values, runs, travels, gives, provides and surprises. Together, we have evolved spiritually and mentally and each passing day strengthens our bond. It’s a beautiful thing.
We’ll see you all next year for the 4th Annual 2016 College Park Mother’s Day 5K. “One love” ladies and keep inspiring!
