Why Juice? Though juicing disregards the fiber from fruits and veggies its benefits are plentiful. Vitamins and minerals are absorbed directly into the blood stream without the fiber, which slows digestion and absorption. Juicing heals and repairs tissue, strengthens the immune system, and gives the digestion system and liver a well-deserved break. But most of all, a juice detox forces toxins out the body which in-turn encourages fat lost, since the body actually produces additional fat just to store and protect you from these toxins. Reduced toxins equals less body fat. Also juicing allows organs to temporarily vacation.
Detox Shopping List:
Fruits — oranges, apples, pineapple, lemons, grapefruit, strawberries
Veggies — kale, spinach, cucumber, carrots, beets, celery, broccoli, wheatgrass, cabbage, peppers, & tomatoes
Also garlic and ginger
Equipment: A centrifugal or masticating juicer. A centrifugal juicer is the most common and relatively cheaper, but uses a blade that spins at higher RPMS thus oxygenating the juice, which causes nutrients to escape opposed to preserving them for your consumption. A masticating juicer like the Omega VRT-350 operates at lower speeds and presses the juice out, allowing retention of more nutrients and minerals as well as producing more juice. Masticating juicers are also able to juice wheatgrass and soft fruits such as strawberries and oranges. Our experience with a centrifugal Cuisinart juicer was not able to complete this task.
The plan: The day before the detox kicks off eat only fresh fruit and veggies to prepare the body. During the 7 days you will need to drink an abundance of water. De-cafe herbal tea adds a nice touch as well. Start each morning with warm lemon water and then prepare a fruit juice. Lemons are great for alkalizing and raise your pH balance. Fit Fathers’ favorite morning juice is our very own Rainbow Delight consisting of oranges, apples, pineapple, and strawberries served over ice. Fruit juice is important in the morning since it will jumpstart your day with natural sugars (fructose) which the body will use as fuel. Drink a few cups of water in-between and next have a mixed juice for lunch; typically kale, cucumber, apple, ginger, and oranges. Drink green tea as a snack and more water before the evening’s all veggie drink. Basically, juice every cruciferous veggie in the fridge. We put ginger in almost all of our fruit drinks and garlic in the veggie drinks. Both are immune boosters and pump up the metabolism.
Try to walk lightly each day while soaking up the all-important Vitamin D from the sun, but refrain from heavy activity. Active D is needed for your body to absorb calcium properly. The day after the fast concludes eat half a grapefruit while easing your way back into solid meals. Please DO NOT break a juice fast with pasta or a burger. You will regret it! A few hours later eat another soft fruit. A few hours more have a smoothie (almond milk, ice, banana, apple, kale, pineapple, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, and an orange). Green veggies and pumpkins seeds are full of iron, yet iron needs Vitamin C in the same meal for better absorption. For this reason we add a C veggie like peppers or citrus fruit in every juice combo. Continue drinking water. The following day introduce steamed veggies in addition to more fruit. We also suggest a colonic on the last day of your detox for greater elimination and increased toxin release. At this time take a probiotic a few times that week to restore good bacteria back into your gut.
Recipes will be to your own delight. Play around with the ingredients. Beets, apples, and carrots will offset the stern taste of the green veggies. For example, wheatgrass, kale, apples, and oranges make a delicious drink. Try to incorporate a fresh juice blend in your new healthful diet each and every day. Your body will be blessed while providing added energy, clearer thinking, and the satisfaction that you are meeting your daily nutritional needs.
