It was a monumental day as hundreds of people stepped away from their typical Father’s Day activities on Sunday, June 15, 2014 to take part in the groundbreaking, Fit Fathers Day (FFD) inaugural celebration on Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring, MD. Fathers, male role models and their families participated in exercises, fitness competitions, healthy eating and more to celebrate Father’s Day in a brand new way. Fit Fathers, DaddysCool.com and Powerful Beyond Measure came together to show fathers the importance of being health conscious and leading by example through positive, nutritional choices. The celebration was a resounding success.
“The moment has never been better for Fit Fathers Day to manifest,” stated Fit Fathers founder Kimatni D. Rawlins. “It was time for men to rise to the occasion and positively lead their loved ones into daily fitness, ultimate nutrition and positive lifestyle habits.”
Sponsored by Mazda, Volkswagen, Whole Foods, BOSE, The Washington Auto Show, Vitacoco, Shoe City and Mothers, FFD also included an eye-popping car and motorcycle show featuring 30 of the hottest, new and custom vehicles to entertain a wider audience. Fit Fathers closed down the plaza street to display some of dad’s favorite two and four wheelers. This magnetic motor component was powered by Automotive Rhythms, Throttle Life, Capitol Cadillac, Fitzgerald Auto Mall, Apple Ford and Rolling Status Car Club. A special thanks to local builder and customizer ‘Bay’ for bringing out a few of his custom works of art.
Nike celebrity trainer Deanna Jefferson and Kimatni Rawlins lead the participants in an hour-long fitness routine called the “Social Workout.” Families could be seen training along with their children on the outdoor pavilion. One dad in particular attempted the light workout cradling his kid. There were fitness competitions including basketball, hula hooping, push ups and planking with awesome prizes from Bose audio, Mothers car care and Shoe City. A Capoeira Angola demonstration honored Brazil and the World Cup, and the crowd favorite Greenbelt S.I.T.Y Stars dazzled everyone with their electrifying Double Dutch moves.
FFD partners who participated with emphatic energy comprised Children’s National Medical Center, Ride To Conquer Cancer, Radio One, the Men’s Health Network and Washington Sports Club. The “Daddy’s Cool” experience, as expected, showcased healthy food trucks such as Everlasting Life’s vegan soul food. Mentioned across multiple radio platforms including FM, AM, satellite radio and Internet radio, NBC 4 Washington correspondingly covered the momentous day. Through social media and the use of the hashtag #FitFathersDay appearing across multiple newsfeeds, there has already been an air of anticipation for Fit Fathers Day 2015.
Fit Fathers Day made a lasting impact on dads like Craig Stewart who came with his three young daughters. “It was a fresh and enlightening event, and I hope it becomes a new tradition for my kids and I on Father’s Day!”
Though FFD has passed, the movement continues! Take an oath to become more proactive and active by viewing the Fit Fathers video PSA and post a picture and statement on our Facebook page on why you are committed to Fit Fatherhood. Motivate your family with daily exercise; replace chips, cookies and soda with fruits, water and fresh, homemade juices; cook more meals at home; spend physical time with your kids; and eliminate fast food entirely. Statistics show that over one third of children in the United States are obese and recent studies suggest that fathers have the most influence over what children eat and what they do.
“Ultimately, nutritional eating, a conscious focus on overall wellness and regular exercise will keep us all breathing easy, running stronger, swimming faster, cycling longer and laughing harder,” Rawlins added.
